A Distributed Control System (DCS) is a plant-wide process automation platform where control functions are distributed across multiple dedicated controllers located throughout the facility — rather than being centralized in a single unit. Each controller manages a specific section of the process, communicating with field instruments, sensors, and actuators via dedicated fieldbus networks, while a central operator station provides a unified view of the entire plant. DCS systems are designed for high availability, continuous operation, and large-scale process control — featuring redundant CPUs, power supplies, and communication networks to ensure up to 99.999% system uptime.
