THERMO CLIPS

THERMO CLIPS

Introduction:

The ThermoClip Series provides a simple, reliable visual indication of overtemperature conditions on electrical assets. Using patented Thermo-Lock thermochromic technology, these easy-to-install clips change colour when exposed to elevated temperatures, providing a clear visual warning.

Designed to work in conjunction with IRISS large-format inspection windows, ThermoClip indicators add a valuable visual component to electrical inspection programs, supporting inspections before and between infrared and ultrasound surveys.

With a unique memory-effect feature, ThermoClip indicators can permanently retain the colour change resulting from an overtemperature event. This provides inspectors with a visible record of temperature excursions, particularly useful for intermittently loaded systems where elevated temperatures may not be present during the inspection.

Key Features:

Simple Application: Quick, push-on installation requires no de-energizing or disconnection of the electrical circuit.

Thermo-Lock Technology: Patented thermochromic technology changes and locks the indicator's colour to signal that an elevated-temperature event has occurred.

Easy to Read: Highly visible thermochromic colour changes provide an immediate visual warning when viewed through IR inspection windows.

Cost-Effective Solution: Requires minimal investment while providing a noticeable enhancement to electrical safety, maintenance, and reliability programs.

Broad Coverage: Multiple models accommodate a wide range of cable sizes, from 17 AWG to 750 MCM, for circuits rated up to 36 kVAC / 600 VDC.

Passive Design: A temperature-responsive, passive visual alert system that requires no power, wiring, or electronic components.

Memory Effect: The indicator retains evidence of an overtemperature excursion, helping inspectors identify historical thermal events.

Installation

ThermoClip Series clips are designed to be push-fitted onto the outer insulation of an electrical cable, adjacent to the cable connection terminal at a recommended distance of 15–30 mm.

ThermoClip must not be inserted into the current-carrying path of the circuit or attached directly to bare, energized, or otherwise exposed conductive parts.

Safety & Installation Caution

ThermoClip Series products are designed for use on electrical cables. Installation must be assessed and performed by a competent electrician or qualified electrical professional, in accordance with all applicable local electrical codes, standards and regulatory requirements.

ThermoClip is intended to provide a passive visual indication of overtemperature conditions and should be used as part of a comprehensive electrical inspection and maintenance program. It does not replace established infrared, ultrasound, or other electrical inspection methods.

Material & Performance:

The overtemperature connection indicator is manufactured using a thermochromic masterbatch incorporated into a polypropylene base material. The material formulation consists of approximately 5–10% thermochromic masterbatch and 90–95% polypropylene, providing flame-retardant performance to UL94 V-0, with a self-extinguishing and non-halogenated formulation.

The indicator begins to change colour at approximately 53°C and reaches a permanent pink colour change at 70°C. The typical response time at 70°C is 5–20 seconds, providing a clear visual indication of an overtemperature condition.

Storage & Service Life

Products should be stored under controlled room-temperature and humidity conditions of 16°C to 27°C and 40–60% relative humidity. For reliable performance, overtemperature connection indicators should be replaced within a maximum service life of five years.
